Pavel Dorofeyev scored what proved to be the game winner early in the third period and Adin Hill made 22 saves as the Vegas Golden Knights handed the host Anaheim Ducks a 3-2 loss on Wednesday night.
Tomas Hertl and Nicolas Roy also scored goals and Shea Theodore had two assists for Vegas, which improved to 25-7-1 all-time against the Ducks (including 11-4-1 at the Honda Center). It was just the second road win of the season for the Golden Knights (2-3-2).
Brock McGinn and Frank Vatrano scored goals and Brett Leason had two assists for Anaheim, which lost for the fifth time in its last six games (1-4-1). Lukas Dostal finished with 37 saves.
Anaheim took a 1-0 lead at the 17:39 mark of the first period when McGinn snapped in a rebound of a Pavel Mintyukov shot from the low slot for his third goal of the season.
Vegas tied it just 92 seconds later on Roy’s fifth goal. Theodore set up the score circling around along the left boards and then passing the puck to Roy in the crease where he tapped it past Dostal on the goaltender’s blocker side.
The Golden Knights took a 2-1 lead midway through the second period on a power-play goal by Hertl, who roofed a rebound of a Jack Eichel shot for his fifth goal. It was Hertl’s first goal in eight games and his fourth on the power play.
Dorofeyev made it 3-1 early in the third period with his team-leading ninth goal, intercepting an attempted clearing pass by Isac Lundestrom in the slot and then knocking in a rebound of his own shot.
The Ducks closed to 3-2 with 13.4 seconds left when Vatrano finished an odd-man rush with a wrist shot past Hill’s blocker side for his second goal of the season. But Anaheim, despite pulling Dostal for an extra attacker, couldn’t manage to get a shot off in the closing moments.
