Defenseman Jalen Chatfield signed a three-year, $9 million extension with the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday.
The deal comes after a season that saw the 6-foot-1 blueliner register a slew of career highs. Chatfield, 28, reached that milestone in goals (eight), assists (14), points (22) and ice time per game (15:11) in 72 regular-season games.
“Jalen has been an integral part of our blue line over the last two seasons and firmly established himself as an NHL defenseman,” said Eric Tulsky, interim general manager of the Hurricanes. “His elite speed and tireless work ethic make him an incredibly dynamic player at both ends of the ice.”
In Carolina’s playoff run this season, Chatfield had two assists while averaging 20:11 of ice time in 11 games.
In 184 career games with the Vancouver Canucks (2020-21) and the Hurricanes, Chatfield has 40 points (14 goals, 26 assists). The Michigan native was signed by Vancouver as an undrafted free agent, then signed by Carolina on July 30, 2021.
