Former WNBA player Jamie Carey was named head coach of the Omaha women’s basketball program on Sunday.
Carey spent the past four seasons as an associate head coach at UTSA following stints as an assistant at Colorado (2015-17), her alma mater Texas (2017-20) and North Texas (2020-21).
A guard for the Connecticut Sun from 2005-08, Carey also earned a silver medal with Team USA at the 2003 Pan American Games and served as the assistant women’s national team director for USA Basketball from 2010-14. She was twice named All-Big 12 during her career with the Longhorns.
“We are proud to welcome Jamie Carey as the new leader of our women’s basketball program,” said Omaha athletic director Adrian Dowell. “Coach Carey brings us a wealth of experience at the highest level of collegiate athletics both as a coach and student-athlete, coupled with her playing career in the WNBA. Throughout her coaching career and during the interview process, Coach Carey has successfully demonstrated a passion towards holistically developing student-athletes while pursuing competitive success. We are excited for this program’s future under her leadership.”
Omaha went 14-17 (5-11 Summit) last season and fired coach Carrie Banks at the end of her fifth season in the role. The Mavericks have not posted a winning record since finishing 16-15 during the 2016-17 season.
