Kaiden Guhle scores in OT to power Canadiens past Bruins

Kaiden Guhle’s rush up ice for a backhand goal at 2:13 of overtime lifted the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2, come-from-behind win over the visiting Boston Bruins on Saturday night.

Nick Suzuki scored his fourth goal in as many games and Brendan Gallagher also lit the lamp for Montreal, which has won back-to-back contests in overtime.

Guhle also added an assist as the Habs scored two goals in a rapid-fire span in the third period.

Sam Montembeault made 26 saves in the win, 13 of which came in the third.

Brad Marchand logged a goal and an assist to lead the Bruins, who had a two-game win streak snapped.

Boston defenseman Charlie McAvoy recorded a pair of assists in his first game after completing a four-game, NHL-levied suspension for an illegal check to the head.

Jeremy Swayman stopped 24 shots in the loss.

Boston had a 28-27 shot advantage. Both teams were just 1-for-4 on the power play.

A run of late second-period penalties caught up to Boston early in the third. Just 24 seconds into the final frame, Suzuki buried a wrister from above the right circle after collecting a point-to-point feed from Mike Matheson.

Montreal grabbed a lead only 27 ticks later as Gallagher sprawled over Swayman to corral the rebound of Guhle’s point shot.

At 12:58, Boston knotted the score with a power-play goal when Marchand, stationed at the top of the crease, deflected David Pastrnak’s shot from the circle.

The Bruins wasted little time getting out in front as Zacha tipped in McAvoy’s shot from the high slot only 36 seconds into the first period.

Each team recorded only six shots on goal in the opening period. Gallagher hit a post behind Swayman that kept Montreal scoreless about halfway through.

Neither team was called for a penalty until the 7:11 mark of the middle frame when Montreal’s Johnathan Kovacevic held Boston star David Pastrnak.

After an unsuccessful power play, Boston was called for three straight infractions before the end of the second, including two that resulted in 25 seconds of 5-on-3 time for the hosts.
