Kings snap 4-game skid, double up Hurricanes

Kings, Hurricanes

Kevin Fiala scored twice and the Los Angeles Kings defeated the host Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 on Saturday night in Raleigh, N.C.

Phillip Danault had a goal and an assist and Trevor Moore also scored for the Kings, who broke a four-game losing streak. Quinton Byfield had two assists and Darcy Kuemper stopped 26 shots.

Jesper Kotkaniemi and Eric Robinson scored for the Hurricanes, who had their seven-game point streak snapped. Frederik Andersen made 22 saves.

Robinson pulled Carolina to within 3-2 at 5:44 of the third period. He scored on a shot from the right circle off the rush after stretch pass from Brent Burns. It was Burns’ 900th career point.

Fiala’s second tally restored Los Angeles’ two-goal lead with 8:20 left when he beat Andersen from the left circle off the rush.

Kotkaniemi gave Carolina a 1-0 lead with 4:38 left in the first period when he tipped in a shot from the left point by Sean Walker.

Danault tied it 1-1 with 2:03 remaining in the opening period. He intercepted a pass by Dmitry Orlov and beat Andersen with a shot from the top of the left circle. The Kings argued that Orlov was pulled down by Warren Foegele but there was no call.

It was Los Angeles’ first goal since the first period of Monday’s 5-2 loss at the Detroit Red Wings.

It took only a little over three minutes for the Kings to take a 2-1 lead as Moore chipped in a shot from the right side of the crease 1:03 into the second period.

Fiala made it 3-1 when he picked up a loose puck just outside the Hurricanes’ blue line, cut in off right wing, cut across the front of the net and scored from the bottom of the left circle with 3:02 left in the middle period.

Kings defenseman Mikey Anderson (finger) and Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov (upper-body) did not play.
