Knights get off to fast start in win over Canucks

Vegas Golden Knights

Jonathan Marchessault had a goal and two assists and Jack Eichel and Anthony Mantha each added a goal and an assist as the Vegas Golden Knights won their third straight game, 6-3, over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night in Las Vegas.

William Karlsson, Noah Hanifin and Brett Howden also scored goals and Ivan Barbashev added two assists for the Golden Knights (42-25-8, 92 points), who improved their third-place lead in the Pacific Division to five points over Los Angeles. Logan Thompson finished with 27 saves to win his sixth consecutive start.

Quinn Hughes scored two goals and Nils Hoglander also scored for Pacific Division leader Vancouver (46-21-8, 100 points), which lost for the third time in its last four games. Casey DeSmith made 24 saves for the Canucks, who were playing their first road game since March 7.

Vegas scored four goals in the first period while building a 4-1 lead. Mantha started the scoring at the 1:37 mark, putting in a rebound after DeSmith stopped Pavel Dorofeyev’s breakaway try.

Marchessault made it 2-0 when he whipped a wrist shot from the right circle past DeSmith’s blocker side for his 41st goal of the season.

Hoglander cut the lead to 2-1 midway through the period when he jammed in a loose puck in front of the crease for his 23rd goal. But Eichel responded just 20 seconds later with his 26th goal, burying a wrist shot from the slot off a Marchessault pass.

Hanifin extended the lead to 4-1 with a power-play goal, one-timing a point shot past a Barbashev screen for his first goal with the Golden Knights and 12th of the season.

Karlsson made it 5-1 early in the second period with a power-play goal, tapping in a rebound sitting in the crease of an Alex Pietrangelo shot that had trickled through DeSmith’s pads.

Vancouver closed to 5-3 on a pair of Hughes goals, the first on a wrist shot from the right point through traffic on a power play at the 6:13 mark of the second period. The second came on a wrist shot that went through traffic and Thompson’s pads early in the third period. But Howden quickly put the Golden Knights back up by three goals 24 seconds later when he chipped in a Keegan Kolesar pass inside the far post at the end of an odd-man rush to finish the scoring.
