Lynx out to bounce back vs. Sky, Angel Reese

Angel Reese

Angel Reese has a chance to make more WNBA history during her stellar rookie season for the Chicago Sky.

The Minnesota Lynx will try to contain Reese and bounce back from a highly disappointing performance.

Reese eyes a single-season, league-record 10th straight double-double Sunday, when the Sky try to send visiting Minnesota to consecutive losses for the first time this season.

Though Chicago (6-10) is fighting for a playoff spot and was outscored 25-14 in the second quarter of Thursday’s 95-83 home loss to Las Vegas, Reese posted 18 points and 11 rebounds. Her ninth straight double-double tied Candace Parker’s single-season record set in 2015.

Reese has averaged 15.7 points and 12.9 boards over the last nine games.

“She’s about the challenge. She’s definitely about the challenge,” Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon said of Reese, who ranks second in the league averaging 11.1 rebounds.
“She’s growing. She knows what she does best.”

Reese managed to hold her own against Aces superstar A’ja Wilson on Thursday. Now, she could find herself mixing it up with another of the WNBA’s best in Minnesota’s Napheesa Collier, who ranks among the league’s top four in scoring at 21.4 points per game and rebounding (10.4).

Collier recorded 29 points and 11 boards Thursday, where the Lynx’s run of seven straight overall victories was snapped with their 94-88 loss on the road to the Dallas Wings, who entered on an 11-game losing streak.

Minnesota (13-4) was fresh off a victory over the New York Liberty on Tuesday for the Commissioner’s Cup title, but a club that allows just 75 points per contest yielded its most for a non-overtime game this season.

The Lynx also saw the Wings to go 9 of 15 (60 percent) from 3-point range and record 14 offensive rebounds.

“This is a job. We need to come prepared,” Collier said. “Use it for a learning experience and be better for our game on Sunday.”

Chicago won two of three against the Lynx last season but is just 3-6 at home in 2024.
