Mitch Marner and Matthew Knies each had a goal and an assist and the Toronto Maple Leafs ended their three-game losing streak by holding on for a 4-3 victory over the host Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.
William Nylander and Bobby McMann also scored for Toronto, while Auston Matthews picked up a pair of assists. Goaltender Joseph Woll made 45 saves in the victory.
Marner tallied what ended up being the game-winning goal 18 seconds into the third period, zipping through a crowd of Oilers for his 16th tally of the season.
That put the Maple Leafs up 4-1, but Edmonton then rallied.
Zach Hyman found the back of the net at 6:04 of the third by cutting into the middle of the ice and snapping a shot past Woll. Corey Perry then fooled Toronto’s goalie with a snap shot from the blue line that cut the Oilers’ deficit to 4-3 at 11:33.
It looked like Edmonton tied things up with just over two minutes remaining, but Leon Draisaitl had his goal called back for offside following a coach’s challenge. Toronto hung on from there.
Evan Bouchard also scored for the Oilers, who have dropped back-to-back games after winning three in a row. Stuart Skinner finished with 24 saves.
Nylander took over the game early. Less than two minutes into the contest, he dangled the puck past Edmonton defenseman John Klingberg, but he was unable to slide it into the net. Then with 13:28 left in the first, Nylander scored for the 30th time this season.
Knies doubled up the Maple Leafs’ lead less than three minutes later while on the power play, making it 2-0 at 9:08.
The onslaught continued at 12:50 of the opening frame, as McMann tallied another power-play marker for the Maple Leafs to put Edmonton in a 3-0 hole.
Bouchard finally got the Oilers on the board thanks to a scorching slap shot with 8:33 remaining in the middle frame.
