Michael Carcone’s hat trick powers Coyotes past Blackhawks

Michael Carcone collected his first career hat trick in a four-point game and Jack McBain scored twice and added two assists as the Arizona Coyotes handed the Chicago Blackhawks a 8-1 drubbing on Monday in Tempe, Ariz.

Sean Durzi and Liam O’Brien each produced a goal and an assist while Josh Brown also scored for the Coyotes. Goaltender Connor Ingram made 31 saves, Alex Kerfoot collected three assists and Travis Boyd logged two assists as Arizona snapped a two-game losing streak.

Connor Bedard scored in the first minute for the Blackhawks, who have lost four of five games. Starting goalie Arvid Soderblom was pulled after surrendering the seventh goal, on 22 shots. Petr Mrazek stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced in relief.

Bedard, the top pick of this year’s draft, scored on the game’s first shot 28 seconds into the clash. It was his third goal in four games and fourth of the season, but the game was all Coyotes thereafter.

Carcone sent his squad off and running at 2:23 of the first period by pouncing on a loose puck in the slot and lifting a sharp-angled offering past Soderblom.

Brown converted a shot from the right circle for his first of the season, putting the Coyotes ahead at 13:53 of the first, and then it became the Carcone show.

Carcone netted his second of the game two minutes later when he buried a chance from the right circle for the power-play goal.

He completed the hat trick five minutes into the second period. Carcone whacked the puck from behind the net, then watched it bounce off the top of the cage and off Soderblom’s back into the net for his fourth of the season.

McBain scored for the third consecutive game at 6:38 of the second when he ripped a high shot from the slot to make it a 5-1 affair. Durzi notched his fourth of the season five minutes later, finding the mark from the high slot.

O’Brien made it 7-1 with 4:34 remaining in the second period on a play originally waived off. O’Brien directed the puck into the net with his skate, but after a review, it was considered a good goal, his first of the season.

McBain capped his career-night point effort and rounded out the scoring when he tallied his second of the game and fourth of the season midway through the third period.
