Nelson Deossa’s long-range effort sparked Monterrey to a 4-0 win over Urawa Red Diamonds on Wednesday in Pasadena, Calif., and the Mexican side advanced to the Club World Cup’s knockout phase.
Monterrey (1-0-2, 5 points) ended up in second place in Group E. Inter Milan (2-0-1, 7 points) topped the group after registering a 2-0 victory over River Plate (1-1-1, 4 points) on Wednesday in Seattle.
Urawa (0-3-0, 0 points) wound up at the bottom of Group E.
Deossa blasted a 35-yard left-footed shot into the top left corner in the 30th minute, the first of three Monterrey goals in nine minutes.
German Berterame, who scored twice, doubled the lead in the 34th minute when he rolled a 16-yard shot between a defender’s legs and into the bottom right corner.
Jesus Corona capped the three-goal surge when he capped a counterattack with a 24-yard shot in the 39th minute.
Berterame closed the scoring in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, delivering from close range following a fastbreak.
