Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar help Avalanche rout Red Wings

Nathan MacKinnon had two goals and two assists, Cale Makar had two goals and an assist and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Detroit Red Wings 6-3 on Monday in Denver.

J.T. Compher had a goal and an assist. Artturi Lehkonen also scored, Evan Rodrigues and Devon Toews finished with two assists apiece and Pavel Francouz turned away 26 shots for the Avalanche.

Andrew Copp had a goal and an assist while Ben Chiarot and David Perron also scored for Detroit. Ville Husso made 17 saves on 22 shots and Magnus Hellberg had four in relief of Husso.

The Avalanche struck first when they worked the puck around the Detroit zone, Makar fed Lehkonen in the slot and his wrister beat Husso at 5:12 of the first period, his 12th goal of the season. The Red Wings challenged for goaltender interference but the goal was upheld.

It stayed 1-0 until late in the first when Colorado went on the power play again. Makar got the puck at the point and sent a shot through a screen and by Husso at 18:04.

Makar gave the Avalanche a three-goal lead early in the second period. He took a pass from MacKinnon, skated from the boards to between the circles and beat Husso to the far side with his snap shot at 3:05. It was his 13th of the season and second multi-goal game of the campaign.

The Red Wings hit the post later in the period, and right after Dylan Larkin went off for slashing. Compher cashed in when he tipped in a pass from Rodrigues at 10:06, his ninth goal of the season.

MacKinnon made 5-0 when he skated down the slot and tipped in Rodrigues’ pass at 15:53 of the second period.

Copp scored his fourth goal of the season at 18:58 of the second for the Red Wings to end the shutout bid. Chiarot scored off a faceoff win at 3:40 of the third to make it 5-2. It was Chiarot’s fourth of the season.

MacKinnon answered with a breakaway goal at 5:24, his 13th goal of the season. Perron rounded out the scoring at 19:26.
