NHL roundup: Bruins win showdown with Canucks

Brad Marchand and Danton Heinen bookended the first period with short-handed goals and Linus Ullmark made 17 saves to propel the Boston Bruins to a 4-0 win over the visiting Vancouver Canucks in a Thursday night clash of the NHL’s top two teams.

The Bruins, who have won three of their last four contests, totaled three goals in the opening minute of periods as Morgan Geekie and Pavel Zacha tallied early in the second. Zacha also picked up an assist on Geekie’s goal.

Charlie Coyle and David Pastrnak each had two helpers to contribute to the Boston offense. Coyle is on a 10-game point-scoring streak.

Vancouver was shut out for the first time since the third game of the season and had a 12-game points streak (10-0-2) snapped. Thatcher Demko made 21 saves in the defeat.

Hurricanes 5, Avalanche 2

Carolina’s Martin Necas produced his first career hat trick in the first 17 minutes in a win over Colorado at Raleigh, N.C.

Michael Bunting and Seth Jarvis also scored for the Hurricanes, and Teuvo Teravainen had three assists as Carolina won for the fourth time in five games. Goalie Pyotr Kochetkov was pulled after the first period after yielding two goals, but he was called back for the third after Antti Raanta sustained a lower-body injury. Kochetkov finished with 16 saves and Raanta stopped all nine shots in the second.

Zach Parise, in his third game with the Avalanche, and Samuel Girard scored in a five-second span late in the first period. Alexandar Georgiev was dinged for three goals from Necas across the first four shots in faced, but he ended up with 22 saves.

Flames 5, Devils 3

Jacob Markstrom made 37 saves as Calgary prevailed in Newark, N.J.

Connor Zary and Andrew Mangiapane each had a goal and an assist for the Flames, and Noah Hanifin collected two assists. Mikael Backlund, Kevin Rooney and Andrei Kuzmenko scored Calgary’s other goals. The Flames are on a three-game winning streak.

Ondrej Palat had two goals and Nico Hischier had a goal and an assist for New Jersey. Jesper Bratt recorded assists on all three Devils goals. Vitek Vanecek stopped 25 of 29 shots.

Panthers 4, Capitals 2

Ryan Lomberg scored the game-winning goal with 5:32 left in the third period in Sunrise, Fla., as Florida sent Washington to its sixth straight loss.

The Panthers, who have won five of their past six games, also got one goal and two assists from Matthew Tkachuk, one goal apiece from Sam Reinhart and Eetu Luostarinen and 21 saves from Sergei Bobrovsky.

Capitals star Alex Ovechkin scored for the third straight game. Ovechkin has just 11 goals this season but tallied career goal No. 833, second only to Wayne Gretzky. Washington also got a goal from Anthony Mantha and 37 saves from Darcy Kuemper.

Golden Knights 3, Coyotes 2

Vegas scored three times in the first period and held on for the win in Tempe, Ariz.

Jonathan Marchessault, Nicolas Hague and Chandler Stephenson scored for the Golden Knights, who are 8-2-1 in their past 11 games. Adin Hill made 20 saves for the win.

Jason Zucker and Clayton Keller scored for the Coyotes, who have lost four in a row. Connor Ingram allowed three goals on six shots before being replaced by Karel Vejmelka (28 saves) in the first period.

Islanders 6, Lightning 2

Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat each had a goal and an assist as New York routed Tampa Bay in Elmont, N.Y.

Noah Dobson, Barzal and Kyle Palmieri scored in the first period and Ryan Pulock, Horvat and Casey Cizikas scored in the second for the Islanders, who improved to 3-2-1 under new head coach Patrick Roy. New York goalie Ilya Sorokin made 18 saves.

Nikita Kucherov and Brandon Hagel scored for the Lightning, who lost both ends of a back-to-back in New York following a three-game winning streak prior to the All-Star break. Jonas Johansson recorded 18 saves.

Flyers 4, Jets 1

Travis Konecny had one goal, one assist and one fight for a Gordie Howe hat trick to lift host Philadelphia past Winnipeg.

Morgan Frost and Ryan Poehling each added one goal and one assist while Tyson Foerster contributed a goal for the Flyers, who have won two in a row since the All-Star break. Samuel Ersson made 28 saves for the win.

Kyle Connor scored the lone goal for the Jets, who have lost five in a row (0-4-1). Winnipeg goaltender Laurent Brossoit stopped 17 shots.
