NHL roundup: Maple Leafs put away Penguins in OT

William Nylander scored a minute into overtime to help the Toronto Maple Leafs escape with a 6-5 road win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.

Nylander also had an assist for Toronto, which won its fifth straight and its eighth in nine games.

Both Matthew Knies and Auston Matthews scored and had an assist for the Leafs, who also got goals from Max Domi, Conor Timmins and John Tavares. Joseph Woll finished with 29 saves for Toronto.

Sidney Crosby scored once and dished out two assists for the Penguins, passing Gordie Howe for 10th place on the all-time assists list (1,050) and Bobby Hull for 18th on the goal-scoring list (611). Rickard Rakell scored twice for Pittsburgh, Bryan Rust had a goal and two assists and Cody Glass had a goal.

Rangers 4, Predators 0

J.T. Miller and K’Andre Miller scored in a span of 2:23 early in the second period as New York earned a shutout victory over visiting Nashville.

Jonathan Quick, making his 800th career regular-season appearance, made 19 of his 34 saves in the third period en route to his 402nd career win.

The Predators were blanked for the ninth time this season and lost for the 10th time in 13 games.

Hurricanes 2, Flames 1 (OT)

Sebastian Aho scored with 1:44 remaining in overtime to give Carolina a victory against Calgary in Raleigh, N.C.

Aho scored for the third game in a row, and the Hurricanes won for just the second time in their last five games. Defenseman Jaccob Slavin scored Carolina’s first goal, and Pyotr Kochetkov finished with 15 saves.

Nazem Kadri recorded Calgary’s first goal in more than 171 minutes to tie the score on a third-period power play. That tally came 7:06 into the period. Calgary’s Dustin Wolf stopped 31 shots.

Stars 6, Blues 3

Wyatt Johnston’s third-career hat trick helped Dallas pick up its fifth win in six games with the victory over visiting St. Louis.

The Stars went 4-for-4 on power plays, three of which ended with Johnston goals. The Blues, meanwhile, outshot the hosts 42-21, but Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger stood firm with a season-high 39 saves.

Zack Bolduc, Dylan Holloway and Nathan Walker each scored for St. Louis, which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end.

Wild 1, Bruins 0

Filip Gustavsson pitched a 28-save shutout and Frederick Gaudreau scored the only goal of the game as Minnesota snapped its three-game skid with a shutout victory over Boston in Saint Paul, Minn.

Gaudreau’s second tally in three games came at 5:01 of the second period and stood up as Gustavsson made 13 stops in the final frame to complete his career-high fourth shutout of the season.

Boston was shut out for the sixth time and fell to 1-4-2 in its last seven games despite Jeremy Swayman recording 21 saves.

Golden Knights 2, Devils 0

Adin Hill made 25 saves for his third shutout of the season and Noah Hanifin had a goal and an assist to lead Vegas to a victory over New Jersey in Las Vegas.

Mark Stone also scored a goal and Jack Eichel added two assists for Vegas. The Golden Knights extended their Pacific Division lead to four points over Edmonton with the win. It was Hill’s 10th career shutout.

Jacob Markstrom, making his first start since Jan. 22 after missing 11 games with a sprained MCL, finished with 22 saves for New Jersey. The Devils dropped two points behind Carolina and into third place in the Metropolitan Division with the loss.
