P.K. Subban retires after 13 seasons

Three-time All-Star defenseman P.K. Subban announced his retirement Tuesday after 13 seasons in the NHL.

Subban, 33, announced “the end of this chapter” on social media after 834 games and 467 points (115 goals, 352 assists).

“I never looked at myself or ever felt I was ‘just a hockey player.’ I always looked at myself as a person who happened to play hockey,” Subban said in an Instagram post. “Having that perspective allowed me to enjoy every shift like it was my last, celebrate every goal with emotion, and play every game as if someone paid to watch me play who had never seen me play before.

“A sincere thank you to the many players that I either played with or competed against who brought out the best in me.”

Subban was selected in the second round of the 2007 draft by Montreal. He played seven seasons with the Canadiens before being traded to Nashville in June 2016. The Predators traded him to New Jersey in June 2019, and he played his final three seasons with the Devils.

Subban won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 2012-13 and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for leadership and humanitarian efforts this past season.
