Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin is the latest high-profile athlete to have his home burglarized, reportedly losing three Stanley Cup championship rings.
Malkin’s home in the Pittsburgh suburb of Sewickley, Pa., was broken into on Saturday, according to local media reports. The Penguins were hosting the Ottawa Senators at about the same time.
The team confirmed to Pittsburgh television station WPXI on Tuesday night that it is working with local authorities and team security.
“Malkin has requested that his privacy be respected during this time,” the Penguins said in a statement, adding that there will be no further comment.
TV station KDKA reported that the rings are missing and that Malkin’s home security was down and his safe was left open at the time of the burglary.
Malkin, 38, did not play in Saturday’s 5-0 loss and was placed on injured reserve Sunday with an upper-body injury. The former Hart Trophy recipient returned to the ice Tuesday and tallied an assist in a 4-2 home loss to the Seattle Kraken.
The veteran forward joined an unfortunate list of sports stars whose homes have been targeted in recent months, including the NFL’s Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Joe Burrow, the NBA’s Luka Doncic, Bobby Portis and Mike Conley, and the NHL’s Tyler Seguin.
Malkin has 33 points (eight goals, 25 assists) in 42 games this season, the Russian’s 19th campaign with Pittsburgh. He ranks second in franchise history in games (1,187) and third in goals (506), assists (823) and points (1,329).
