Power play propels Lightning to OT win over Blackhawks

Blackhawks, Lightning

Nikita Kucherov capped a three-point outing with a power-play goal 58 seconds into overtime, and the Tampa Bay Lightning rallied to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 on Friday.

Kucherov one-timed the winner from the right circle after earlier posting two assists. He stretched his point streak to 11 games, the longest active run in the NHL.

The Lightning tied the game overtime with 41 seconds left in regulation, scoring on a six-on-four situation as they had a power play and pulled the goalie. Guentzel tipped in a pass from Kucherov.

Tampa Bay, which ended a two-game skid, went 3-for-3 with the man advantage.

Mitchell Chaffee and Nick Paul also scored, Victor Hedman had two assists and Guentzel also logged two points as the Lightning moved to 11-0-1 in their past 12 regular-season games in Chicago. Jonas Johansson made 11 saves for the victory.

Getting all their tallies from rookies, the Blackhawks saw Colton Dach hit the net for the first time in the NHL, while Frank Nazar and Louis Crevier had a goal and an assist apiece.

Goalie Arvid Soderblom stopped 36 shots for Chicago, which blew a 3-1 lead. The Blackhawks still earned a point for the fourth straight game (1-0-3).

Chicago scratched Taylor Hall, and the 2017-18 Hart Trophy winner who was subsequently traded to the Carolina Hurricanes as part of a three-way deal involving the Colorado Avalanche.

In the first of two meetings between the clubs in five days, Chaffee forced a hooking penalty from Dach for the game’s first power play and put the visitors ahead on the subsequent man advantage.

Chaffee received a backhanded feed from Kucherov and beat Soderblom on the short side at 10:59 of the opening period.

The Blackhawks soon scored twice in a span of 2:18 for a 2-1 lead. Dach redeemed himself by hitting the net at 16:29 of the first, and Nazar ripped one over Johansson at 18:47.

In the second period, the home side went up 3-1 when Crevier potted his third career goal at 4:59. However, Paul redirected Hedman’s backhander with eight seconds left to give Tampa Bay life as the period ended.

Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones (illness) did not play.

Lightning forward Cam Atkinson skated in his 800th career game.
