PWHL Minnesota named American Hockey League executive Melissa Caruso as its new general manager.
Caruso, a native of St. Paul, Minn., spent 15 years with the AHL — including the past six as vice president of hockey operations and governance.
“Melissa stood out as the ideal candidate for general manager of PWHL Minnesota,” said Jayna Hefford, PWHL senior vice president of hockey operations. “Her strong background in operations and governance, combined with her extensive hockey knowledge and leadership experience, make her a great fit for the role. Additionally, Melissa’s passion for the game, along with her ties to the local community, positions her perfectly to lead the team both on and off the ice.”
Caruso replaced former U.S. Olympian Natalie Darwitz, who was removed from her position by the PWHL on June 8 following a review of team operations. Multiple media outlets reported Darwitz had clashed with coach Ken Klee, with the latter reportedly gaining the support of the team’s veterans — including star captain Kendall Coyne Schofield.
That came just weeks after Minnesota won the first Walter Cup in the league’s inaugural season by defeating Boston in five games.
“It’s an exciting time for women’s sports, and I thank leadership for trusting me with the opportunity to lead PWHL Minnesota during these crucial formative years for the league,” Caruso said in the release. “I can’t wait to get started on the journey to defend the Walter Cup in Season Two.”
