Pyotr Kochetkov, Hurricanes silence Lightning

Goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov authored his fifth career shutout and Sebastian Aho and Brent Burns each had a goal and an assist as the visiting Carolina Hurricanes blanked the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-0 on Saturday night.

In his first start since losing to the Lightning in Tampa Bay last month, Kochetkov stopped all 22 shots he faced.

Teuvo Teravainen notched a power-play goal for the Hurricanes, who improved to 6-2-0 in their past eight games.

Stefan Noesen, who had a goal on Saturday, and Martin Necas each played in their 300th NHL game, with the latter playing all 300 with the Hurricanes.

Jaccob Slavin’s second-period assist gave him 197 for his career, passing Dave Babych for first place in franchise history among defensemen.

The Hurricanes went 1-for-3 on the power play and killed a trio of man advantages by Tampa Bay.

Jonas Johansson stopped 28 of 32 shots, but the Lightning were shut out for the first time this season.

The club played without first-line right winger Nikita Kucherov (illness), who leads the team with 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in 14 games.

After the Lightning won 3-0 at home on Oct. 24, things were immediately chippy in the rematch when Carolina’s Michael Bunting and Tampa Bay’s Tanner Jeannot fought just 1:41 into the game after a hit on Aho, the Hurricanes’ top center.

But following Luke Glendening’s roughing penalty on Dmitry Orlov, Teravainen one-timed a blast from the right circle for his ninth goal of the season at 3:10 of the first. Aho and Necas earned assists on the power-play tally.

In the second period, the Hurricanes again appeared to be the sharper team and made it 2-0 thanks to Aho.

Aho found a loose puck in the left circle and punched in his fourth marker at 4:32. Andrei Svechnikov and Slavin drew the helpers.

Without their top offensive threat in Kucherov, the Lightning continued to look sluggish with the puck in the third period and failed to find the net on an early power play.

Just out of the penalty box after his tripping penalty, Burns tapped in his third tally off a pass from Brady Skjei at 11:20. Skjei’s helper was his 100th career point with the Hurricanes.

Noesen put in his third goal to round out the scoring at 17:54.
