Quinton Byfield scored at 0:35 of overtime Thursday night and added an assist as the visiting Los Angeles Kings defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3.

Byfield scored on a one-timer from the right faceoff dot on a pass from Drew Doughty to give the Kings their third straight win.

Warren Foegele, Kevin Fiala and Alex Lafferriere also scored for the Kings and Darcy Kuemper stopped 12 shots. Doughty had two assists.

John Tavares scored twice for the Maple Leafs, who have lost four in a row. Bobby McMann also scored and Matthew Knies added two assists.

Dennis Hildeby made 33 saves, substituting for No. 1 goaltender Anthony Stolarz who is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

Toronto was without captain Auston Matthews (lower-body injury).

Toronto showed improved defensive play in the first period and took a 2-0 lead.

McMann scored an unassisted goal at 8:06 when he stole the puck in the Toronto defensive zone and broke in alone and his shot to the blocker side rolled over the line.

Tavares scored from the low slot at 16:39, converting a pass from Oliver Eckman-Larsson. Kings defenseman Brian Dumoulin was out of the play after being clipped by a stick.

Toronto’s William Nylander clanked a high shot off the right post on a breakaway at 18:55 of the first after coming out of the penalty box.

The Kings scored at 6:51 of the second period, taking advantage of a tired Toronto defense that had put in a long shift. Foegele’s shot from the left circle went under Hildeby’s glove.

The Kings again took advantage of a long Toronto shift to tie the game at 15:51 of the second on Fiala’s sharp-angled wrist shot from close range after a barrage of shots.

Tavares responded at 17:16 with a goal on a sweeping backhand from the edge of the crease after Nylander’s pass found him.

Hildeby rose to the occasion at 8:27 of the third when he foiled Corey Perry from close range.

But Lafferriere tied the game at 13:10 of the third period when he tipped in Brandt Clarke’s point shot.
