red wings

Patrick Kane’s second goal of the game came with one minute remaining in overtime and the host Detroit Red Wings survived blowing a three-goal lead to beat the Anaheim Ducks 5-4 on Sunday.

Marco Kasper, Alex DeBrincat and Kane scored in the first 5:06 of the game for Detroit, J.T. Compher added a goal later, and Alex Lyon stopped 24 shots. Kane’s game-winner came on a breakaway.

Detroit is 8-1-1 over its last 10 games. The Red Wings bounced back from a 4-3 overtime loss to Minnesota on Saturday in which they squandered a two-goal lead in the third period.

On Sunday, Anaheim scored twice in the final 2:16 after it pulled goaltender Lukas Dostal for an extra skater.

Cutter Gauthier scored two goals, including the tying goal with 53 seconds left.

Ryan Strome and Olen Zellweger also scored for the Ducks, while Dostal made 31 saves.

Detroit’s first line produced the first goal at 3:11 of the first period. Lucas Raymond spun around a defender and passed the puck to Kasper, who tapped it past Dostal.

The Red Wings then took advantage of simultaneous tripping penalties against Isac Lundestrom and Brian Dumoulin. During the 5-on-3 advantage, DeBrincat banged in a rebound of Dylan Larkin’s shot.

Detroit still had a 5-on-4 advantage following that goal and converted again to make it 3-0. Kane skated toward the high slot and fired a shot past Dostal on his stick side.

Anaheim got on the board at 8:24 of the period as Strome knocked in the rebound.

The Red Wings scored their third power play goal after Drew Helleson was penalized for interference. Compher did the honors this time, shoveling in a rebound of an Erik Gustafsson shot.

The Ducks cut their deficit to 4-2 at 7:04 of the period. Jackson LaCombe took a shot that deflected off Gauthier’s arm.

After they pulled the goaltender, the Ducks scored with 2:16 left in the third on Zellweger’s shot from the point. Gauthier’s second goal came won a backhander that eluded Lyon’s stick.
