Red Wings find winning touch to snap Blackhawks’ two-game streak

Red Wings, Blackhawks

Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat each collected a goal and assist and Cam Talbot made 28 saves to lift the visiting Detroit Red Wings to a 4-1 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday.

Detroit has won two straight on the heels of a three-game losing streak, relying on a steady attack and dependable goaltending from Talbot to end Chicago’s modest win streak at two.

Petr Mrazek stopped 21 shots for the Blackhawks, who outshot the Red Wings 29-25.

Detroit opened the scoring on a DeBrincat goal with just two seconds remaining in the first period, but the former Blackhawk nearly tallied twice midway through the period.

In the first sequence, DeBrincat flashed from the left circle and toward the crease. Defenseman Alex Vlasic got a stick on the puck, but it trickled toward the goal line and Mrazek lunged with his glove to swat away a would-be goal.

DeBrincat hit the crossbar with a wrist shot moments later.

Chicago’s Nick Foligno tied the game at 1 apiece at 8:42 of the second period, gathering a centering pass from Tyler Bertuzzi and stuffing it past Talbot on the backhand.

The Red Wings regained the advantage less than four minutes later. Larkin took a DeBrincat pass near the right point before bursting past a defender and beating Mrazek with a wrist shot.

Detroit secured a two-goal advantage at 3:03 of the third period when Joe Veleno deflected a long Moritz Seider wrister into the net from in front of the crease.

Andrew Copp’s empty-net goal at 17:45 of the third provided the final margin for the Red Wings, who climbed over .500.

Both teams finished 0-for-2 on the power play. The Blackhawks had 22 hits compared to seven for the Red Wings.

Ryan Donato had a game-high five shots on goal for the Blackhawks, one more than teammate Conor Bedard and the Red Wings’ Larkin.

The Red Wings have been outshot in nine consecutive games.

Detroit has won four straight meetings against Chicago.
