John Gibson and Cam Talbot combined for a shutout and the Detroit Red Wings defeated the host New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Sunday night in Newark, N.J.

Gibson stopped all 21 shots he faced in the first two periods. But the Devils’ Timo Meier knocked Detroit’s Lucas Raymond into Gibson late in the second period. Cam Talbot relieved Gibson, whose injury was undisclosed, to begin the third period and made 10 saves.

It was the Red Wings’ first combined shutout since March 2019 (Jonathan Bernier and Jimmy Howard).

Defenseman Moritz Seider had a goal and two assists, James van Riemsdyk tallied one of each and Dominik Shine scored his first career goal for the Red Wings, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Patrick Kane had two assists.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 shots for New Jersey, which had its four-game winning streak broken.

Seider gave Detroit a 1-0 lead 3:20 into the game when he beat Markstrom on the short side from the right point. From just inside the blue line, Seider let go a fadeaway fluttering wrist shot that was screened by the Red Wings’ Andrew Copp in front of the New Jersey goaltender.

van Riemsdyk’s power-play goal made it 2-0 6:37 into the second period. He tipped in Seider’s airborne shot from the right point. It was only Detroit’s fourth power-play goal in its last 34 power-play chances.

The Devils hit two posts in the middle period.

Markstrom made a spectacular glove save on defenseman Justin Faulk’s partial breakaway with 4:23 remaining in the second period.

Faulk was making his Red Wings debut after being acquired from the St. Louis Blues at the trade deadline on Friday. Faulk was even in 19:28.

Shine got his goal with 9:36 to play when he converted a backhand, cross-crease seam pass from van Riemsdyk. Shine, 32, is in his 10th pro season and all but 14 of his games have come in the American Hockey League. Shine was recalled from Grand Rapids on Saturday.

Detroit captain Dylan Larkin did not play because of a lower-body injury.
