Red Wings rally for shootout win over Oilers

wings, oilers

Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin scored in a shootout to complete a comeback from a two-goal deficit and give the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 win over the host Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night.

Alex Lyon made 45 saves and denied Connor McDavid in the shootout. Edmonton’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins missed the target in the game-ending tiebreaker.

Michael Rasmussen and Larkin scored in regulation for the Red Wings, who won their fourth straight game.

Leon Draisaitl and Jeff Skinner got the goals for the Oilers, who had their three-game winning streak end. Stuart Skinner stopped 32 shots.

Detroit scored twice in the second period to tie the game 2-2.

Rasmussen tipped Jonatan Berggren’s shot out of the air and at 9:59 to put the Red Wings on the board. Larkin tied it with 8:14 left in the middle period when he swept in off right wing and beat Skinner between the pads.

Draisaitl netted a power-play goal to open the scoring 6:49 into the game. He one-timed a loose puck from the right circle past Lyon. The puck had bounced over the stick of Detroit defenseman Ben Chiarot, who was trying to clear the puck out of the zone, just before it got to Draisaitl, who logged his league-leading 36th goal.

Skinner made it 2-0 with 9:31 left in the first period when he slid a loose puck into a vacated net from just outside the crease.

Defenseman John Klingberg made his season debut and his first appearance for the Oilers. He had last played in November 2023 with the Toronto Maple Leafs, then was out for 14 months after surgeries on both hips. Edmonton signed Klingberg to a one-year contract on Jan. 17. He had a shot, a giveaway and was minus-1 in 16:39 of ice time.

The Red Wings’ Vladimir Tarasenko returned after missing a game because of an illness and played in the 800th of his career.

McDavid (Canada) and Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm (Sweden) were named Thursday as alternate captains for their countries in the 4 Nations Face-Off, which will run Feb. 12-20 in Montreal and Boston.
