Red Wings win shootout to end skid, extend Sabres’ slide

Sabres, Red Wings

Lucas Raymond had a goal and an assist and also scored during the shootout as the visiting Detroit Red Wings snapped a five-game losing streak by topping the slumping Buffalo Sabres 6-5 on Monday.

Andrew Copp had two goals and Moritz Seider supplied a goal and an assist. Alex DeBrincat also scored while Dylan Larkin and J.T. Compher had two assists apiece. Larkin added the clinching goal in the shootout.

Detroit goalie Sebastian Cossa, the 15th overall pick of the 2021 draft, recorded the win in relief while making his NHL debut. Cossa made 12 saves after replacing Ville Husso, who was pulled after giving up three first-periods goals on seven shots.

Alex Tuch had the lone tally in the shootout for the Red Wings, who had been on an 0-3-2 skid.

Jason Zucker had two goals and an assist for Buffalo, which has lost seven straight (0-4-3). Tage Thompson, Zach Benson and Nicolas Aube-Kubel had the other Sabres’ goals. Ryan McLeod and Peyton Krebs each notched two assists, and James Reimer made 26 saves.

The Sabres led 3-2 after the first period.

Benson gave Buffalo a quick lead with a wrister from the right side that sailed over Husso’s left shoulder at 1:38.

DeBrincat tied with a backhander in front of the net at 4:05 off a Larkin feed. Copp briefly gave Detroit the lead when he tipped in Compher’s shot at 4:46.

The Sabres tied it when Zucker skated into Detroit territory on the left side, then dropped a pass to Thompson, who scored his 15th goal with a head-on shot at 10:25.

During a delayed penalty against the Red Wings, Buffalo regained the advantage. Zucker took a shot from the left circle that got past a screened Husso at 15:26.

Raymond made it 3-3 at 1:05 of the second period when he moved into the right circle and beat Reimer on the glove side.

Aube-Kubel answered at 2:26 of the second on a rebound of a Beck Malenstyn shot from the point. It was his first goal of the season.

Zucker made it 5-3 midway through the middle period when he skated across the crease and slid the puck past Cossa’s outstretched skate.

Copp cut the Sabres’ lead to one goal at 10:27 of the third period, banging in a rebound of a Ben Chiarot shot.

Seider fired in the tying goal with 4:18 left from the right circle.

Seider was penalized for tripping with 2:19 remaining in regulation, but the Red Wings managed to force overtime.
