Jay Harbaugh is following his father to the NFL but to a different city.
The Seattle Seahawks are working to hire Harbaugh as their special teams coordinator, Sports Illustrated reported Monday, a move considered surprising given that Harbaugh was expected to join his dad, Jim Harbaugh, with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Jay Harbaugh, 34, was ST coordinator under his father at Michigan.
Larry Izzo has been the ST coordinator the past three seasons in Seattle.
Jay Harbaugh worked with new Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald when both were coaching under Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. Macdonald left after one season in 2021 as the Wolverines’ defensive coordinator to become DC under John Harbaugh in Baltimore. Jay Harbaugh and Macdonald were also on the same Ravens staff in 2014.
The Chargers are reportedly likely to retain Ryan Ficken as special teams coordinator.
