Senators goaltender Anton Forsberg will be out 2-3 months with injuries to both knees but won’t require surgery, the Ottawa Sun reported Monday.
Forsberg sustained double MCL injuries and had to be stretchered off the ice following a collision in the crease in the third period of a 6-3 loss to Edmonton on Saturday.
Mads Sogaard relieved Forsberg and stopped all three shots he faced in his season debut. Sogaard, 22, is in line to receive plenty of work with fellow goaltender Cam Talbot out since Jan. 25 because of a lower-body injury.
Forsberg, 30, posted an 11-11-2 record with two shutouts, a 3.26 goals-against average and .902 save percentage in 28 games (25 starts) this season.
He owns a 48-57-11 record with three shutouts, a 3.08 GAA and .908 save percentage in 130 career games (119 starts) with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Chicago Blackhawks, Carolina Hurricanes and Senators.
