Reports: Ryan Grubb exits Alabama to be Seahawks’ OC

Ryan Grubb

Ryan Grubb, who recently agreed to become Alabama’s offensive coordinator, reportedly changed his mind and is heading back to Seattle for a new job.

Grubb, the University of Washington’s offensive coordinator the past two years, will take over that job with the Seattle Seahawks, ESPN and NFL.com reported Friday night.

Mike Macdonald recently took over as the Seahawks’ head coach, and he settled on Aden Durde as his defensive coordinator earlier Friday, per multiple media outlets.

Grubb had been due to follow former Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer to Tuscaloosa, where DeBoer is stepping in for Nick Saban. Grubb worked under DeBoer at Sioux Falls, Eastern Michigan, Fresno State and Washington.

Grubb, 47, has no NFL coaching experience.

Last season, Grubb helped the Huskies to a 14-1 season that ended with a loss to Michigan in the College Football Playoff championship game. The Washington offense, led by quarterback Michael Penix Jr., running back Dillon Johnson and wide receiver Rome Odunze, finished second in the country in passing offense (343.7 yards per game), 12th in total offense (462.1 yards per game) and 13th in scoring offense (36 points per game).

Shane Waldron served as the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator from 2021-23. Seattle’s offense wound up 21st in the NFL last year in total yards (322.9 per game), and Waldron subsequently was hired as the Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator after Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll moved to a front office position.

Durde, 44, was the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line coach the past three seasons. He previously was part of the Atlanta Falcons’ defensive staff from 2018-2020.
