Scottie Scheffler on Tour format for FedEx Cup: ‘It’s silly’

Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler isn’t a fan of the PGA Tour’s current format to determine the winner of the FedEx Cup.

Scheffler made his feelings known on Wednesday, one day before the FedEx Cup playoffs begin at the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn.

The world’s top-ranked golfer is a six-time winner on the PGA Tour this season. He added to his ever-growing resume by capturing a gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

As for the FedEx Cup standings, the 28-year-old resides over 1,900 points ahead of two-time major champion Xander Schauffele.

For all of his success, Scheffler likely will be granted a two-stroke advantage heading into the Tour Championship. And that lead could evaporate in an instant should Scheffler’s weekend, let’s just say, fails to be up to par.

“Yeah, I mean, I talked about it the last few years,” Scheffler said. “I think it’s silly. You can’t call it a season-long race and have it come down to one tournament.

“Hypothetically we get to East Lake and my neck flares up and it doesn’t heal the way it did at The Players, I finish 30th in the FedEx Cup because I had to withdraw from the last tournament? Is that really the season-long race? No. It is what it is.”

Scheffler didn’t stop there.

“It’s a fun tournament,” he said. “I don’t really consider it the season-long race like I think the way it’s called. But you’ve got to figure out a way to strike a balance between it being a good TV product and it still being a season-long race.

“Right now, I don’t know exactly how the ratings are or anything like that, but I know for a fact you can’t really quite call it the season-long race when it comes down to one-stroke play tournament on the same golf course each year.”

Should Scheffler emerge victorious at TPC Southwind, he will match Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh as the lone golfers with seven PGA Tour wins in a single season.

The FedEx Cup playoffs will continue with a 50-golfer field at the BMW Championship on Aug. 22-25 and end with a 30-player tournament at the Tour Championship on Aug. 29-Sept. 1 in Atlanta.
