World No. 1 and reigning FedEx Cup champion Scottie Scheffler has withdrawn from The Sentry after undergoing surgery to repair a cut on his hand sustained during a mishap on Christmas.
Scheffler will miss that tournament, which was scheduled from Jan. 2-5 in Kapalua, Hawaii.
“On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass,” Scheffler’s manager Blake Smith said in a statement released Friday by the PGA Tour.
“Small glass fragments remained in the palm, which required surgery. He has been told that he should be back to 100 percent in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he will have to withdraw from The Sentry. His next scheduled tournament is The American Express (Jan. 16-19 in La Quinta, Calif.).”
On Dec. 10, Scheffler joined Tiger Woods as the only players to win the Jack Nicklaus Award as the PGA’s Player of the Year three years in a row.
Scheffler, 28, was the first player to win seven official PGA Tour events in a calendar year since Woods in 2007.
He became the first player to go back-to-back at The Players Championship, won his second career major title at the Masters and earned his other five wins at signature events: the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage, the Memorial Tournament, the Travelers Championship and the season-ending Tour Championship.
Though not a tour event, Scheffler captured the Olympic gold medal for men’s golf at the Paris Games. He also helped the United States defeat the International team at the Presidents Cup in Montreal.
