Wide receiver DK Metcalf fueled a heated practice session for the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday, swinging his helmet at cornerback Tre Brown.
The altercation occurred after a string of skirmishes during 11-on-11 play. Things first got heated when Brown and wide receiver Jake Bobo went at each other, with Brown giving Bobo a bloody nose.
Brown and Metcalf eventually felt the need to settle their differences in the end zone, with Metcalf taking Brown’s helmet and swinging it at him, hitting safety K’Von Wallace in the process.
First-year Seattle coach Mike Macdonald then temporarily stopped practice to address the team.
“We’ve been getting after it,” Macdonald told NFL Network. “I’m proud of how we responded today. We came out and we were ready to practice. I don’t know what the numbers are, but we’ve been out here, I don’t know, 14 of the past 16 days.
“I think we’re tired of going against one another, but the guys are spirited. We had a great practice and we’re excited for Saturday.”
Fights broke out even after Macdonald spoke to the team, but the Seahawks eventually put aside their differences by the time practice was over.
“Definitely don’t want people fighting out here and stuff, especially against our own teammates,” Macdonald said. “DK gave a great message at the end of practice, just kind of putting everything into perspective. The guys finished out the right way. Proud of our guys.”
Metcalf, 26, had 66 receptions for 1,114 yards and eight touchdowns last season, his fifth with Seattle.
The Seahawks play their first preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday.
