Sebastian Aho lifts Hurricanes over Canucks in OT

Hurricanes, Canucks

Sebastian Aho scored in overtime to give the visiting Carolina Hurricanes a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday.

The Hurricanes recovered after surrendering a two-goal third-period lead, giving them a four-game winning streak, and they completed a 5-1-0 road trip.

In the extra period, Shayne Gostisbehere’s deflected shot was denied, but Aho pounced on the rebound at the 46-second mark to net his third goal of the season.

Martin Necas had a goal and an assist and William Carrier and Jack Roslovic also scored for the Hurricanes. Carolina goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov made 25 saves.

Brock Boeser and Quinn Hughes both scored once in two-point performances while Pius Suter added a goal and J.T. Miller collected two assists for the Canucks, who had their four-game winning streak end. Kevin Lankinen stopped 28 shots.

The Hurricanes dominated the first period and were rewarded at the 5:40 mark when Carrier opened the scoring. He unloaded a slap shot from just beyond the right faceoff dot for his first goal of the season.

Boeser replied less than two minutes later with his fifth of the season, unloading a quick one-timer from the slot set up by Miller. Boeser ran his point streak to six games, in which he has collected three goals and four assists.

Necas restored Carolina’s lead at 15:33 of the opening period. He was sprung on a partial breakaway and converted a wrist shot inside the far post for his fourth goal of the campaign.

Roslovic extended the edge to 3-1 at 1:53 of the second period when he finished a pretty three-way passing play with Andrei Svechnikov and Brent Burns for his fourth goal of the season.

The Canucks fought back, though. Hughes made it a one-goal game at 7:56 of the third period, netting his second goal of the season by blasting a slap shot from beyond the left circle.

Suter tied the clash with 3:05 remaining in regulation, depositing the puck into the net for his second of the season after Kochetkov was unable to execute a pokecheck.
