Seth Jarvis’s OT goal fuels surging Hurricanes past Flyers

flyers

Seth Jarvis scored 1:28 into overtime and the Carolina Hurricanes topped the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 for their fifth straight victory Thursday night at Raleigh, N.C.

Jarvis notched his 26th goal of the season by coming down the right side and beating Flyers goalie Samuel Ersson.

Jordan Martinook and Jalen Chatfield scored in regulation for Carolina (44-20-6, 94 points), while Frederik Andersen made 30 saves. Anderson is 5-0-0 since returning to action after missing more than four months.

Scott Laughton and Travis Konecny had the goals for Philadelphia (35-26-9, 79 points), while Ersson stopped 30 shots.

Konecny converted by coming from behind the net after a scramble in front with 9:44 to play in regulation to knot the score at 2-2. He has a team-leading 28 goals, though this was his first since Feb. 21, though he missed six games during that stretch and didn’t score in six other outings.

The Hurricanes got on the board at 3:56 of the second period with a transition goal. Martinook waited near the top of the slot as Martin Necas took the puck down the right side and delivered a pass to set up Martinook’s 13th goal of the season.

Twenty-five seconds later, the Flyers pulled even when Laughton broke in alone on Andersen. The tally was Laughton’s 12th of the season and second in as many games.

Chatfield put Carolina back on top by bursting into the offensive zone and handling a pass from Sebastian Aho. Three of Chatfield’s eight goals have come this month.

The Flyers had a potential goal wiped out by a coach’s challenge for offsides 4 1/2 minutes into the game.

The biggest play of the opening period came after Ersson misplayed the puck, but made a remarkable recovery to glove an on-the-mark shot from Brendan Lemieux.

Otherwise, scoring chances were limited for both teams in the opening period.

Philadelphia winger Joel Farabee left late in the second period after he was struck in the face by a shot from Laughton.

Flyers captain Sean Couturier sat out the second game in a row as a healthy scratch.
