Stars score three power-play goals, thrash Bruins

stars

Matt Duchene and Tyler Seguin each recorded a goal and two assists as the Dallas Stars beat the host Boston Bruins 5-2 on Thursday.

Dallas enjoyed a 3-for-5 night on the power play, taking advantage of an opponent that had committed a league-leading 39 minor penalties entering the game.

Boston’s continued penalty trend allowed the visitors to pull away in the second period, as Jason Robertson, Logan Stankoven and Seguin scored on three consecutive power plays — all before the 9:00 mark.

Mason Marchment dished out two assists during that span.

Roope Hintz also scored and Casey DeSmith made 25 saves for Dallas, which has split four games since a 4-0-0 start.

The Stars had a 32-27 shots advantage, including 12-6 during their three-goal middle period.

Boston’s David Pastrnak and Justin Brazeau scored, while Jeremy Swayman stopped 27 shots.

The Bruins are winless (0-2-1) in three straight.

After a hooking call on Pastrnak only 11 seconds into the second period, Robertson put Dallas ahead 2-1 just 20 ticks later. He slammed home Jamie Benn’s touch pass from behind the goal line.

Robertson was playing in his 300th career game.

Stankoven cashed on the next Dallas power play at 4:57, putting home Duchene’s quick feed after a drive down the left wing.

The Stars’ man-up streak concluded with Seguin scoring top shelf off a Marchment cross-ice feed to the right dot at 8:59.

Brazeau brought the Bruins within 4-2 at 10:41 of the second. The heavy winger pounced for a net-front goal after Trent Frederic wrapped the puck around the goal and passed to the slot.

DeSmith held the fort on some strong Boston chances in the third, including another Brazeau chance on the doorstep about halfway through the frame. Hintz added an empty-netter with 2:02 left.

Pastrnak put Boston in front with a four-on-four goal at 11:57 of the first. Matthew Poitras pressured and stole the puck behind the goal before dishing to the oncoming winger who beat DeSmith high.

Less than a minute later, as Benn’s double minor continued, Swayman denied Wyatt Johnston on a short-handed break. Dallas did knot the score before intermission, though, as Duchene joined the play and wheeled into the left circle to bury a wrister at 16:20.
