Stars tally 3 times in third period to dump Blackhawks

Mason Marchment’s tiebreaking goal at 14:54 of the third period gave the Dallas Stars a 3-1 comeback victory over the host Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.

Chicago held a 1-0 lead at the second intermission, but Matt Duchene equalized on a power-play goal 2:32 into the third period. The score remained deadlocked until Marchment forced a turnover to create a 2-on-1 chance in the Blackhawks’ zone, and then took the shot himself for the go-ahead goal.

Joe Pavelski added an empty-net goal in the final seconds of play. Roope Hintz had two assists for Dallas.

Jake Oettinger stopped 20 of 21 shots in 31:11 of action in a relief outing. Dallas starting goaltender Scott Wedgewood stopped all 14 shots faced before leaving with an apparent lower-body injury midway through the second period.

Dallas is 3-0-0 against Chicago this season, and 10-1-0 in their last 11 meetings with the Blackhawks dating to the 2020-21 season. That streak includes six consecutive road wins for the Stars in Chicago.

The Stars are 3-1-0 in their last four games.

Boris Katchouk scored the only goal for the Blackhawks, who outshot Dallas by a 35-30 margin.

Chicago is on a three-game losing streak and is 1-7-1 in its last nine games.

Petr Mrazek stopped 27 of 29 shots.

Wedgewood’s injury meant that Oettinger had to play in his second game in as many nights after returning from a 12-game absence due to a lower-body injury. Oettinger faced some immediate pressure, as the Blackhawks fired 11 shots at the goalie during the remainder of the second period.

Oettinger was almost perfect in withstanding this mid-game attack, except for Katchouk’s goal at the 12:56 mark. Zach Sanford forced a turnover and had a breakaway chance that was stopped, but the trailing Katchouk was in position to deposit the rebound for his fourth goal of the season.

The Stars started their comeback early in the third period on Duchene’s 14th goal of the season. The forward scored his third goal in as many games by firing a shot from the edge of the circle that deflected off Mrazek and into the net.
