Streaking Fever open homestand against Sparks

Kelsey Mitchell

The Indiana Fever will aim to extend their winning streak to a season-high five games on Wednesday night when they open a six-game homestand against the Los Angeles Sparks in Indianapolis.

The Fever (17-16), who previously won four in a row from June 13-21, increased their current winning streak to four games after posting back-to-back 100-point performances.

Kelsey Mitchell scored a season-high 36 points, and star rookie Caitlin Clark recorded 28 points and 12 assists in Indiana’s 100-93 victory over the Dallas Wings on Sunday. Mitchell and Clark each hit five 3-pointers for the Fever, who shot a robust 50 percent from beyond the arc.

The triumph followed Indiana’s 100-81 win over the Chicago Sky on Friday.

“When you have two guards that are both making plays, it puts the other team in the tough position of what to take away, who to put on who,” Clark said. “We’re definitely shooting it well. We’re playing off each other well. We’re looking for each other, and we’re getting downhill, too. I think it’s been a good balance of everything.”

Mitchell scored 18 points in Indiana’s 78-73 victory in Los Angeles on May 24 before the Sparks countered four days later by overcoming a 30-point effort from Clark in an 88-82 victory in Indianapolis.

Dearica Hamby scored 18 and 17 points, respectively, in those two games for Los Angeles (7-25), but she was limited to five in an 80-62 setback to the visiting Atlanta Dream on Sunday.

Sparks rookie Rickea Jackson contributed 13 points, marking her 10th straight double-digit scoring performance.

“If coach says I’m becoming a star, then I feel that I am because he doesn’t say that much, but I’m never content,” Jackson said, per the Los Angeles Times. “I’ve tried to get better each and every game. I pride myself more on defense, not my scoring, and I’m still not 100 percent where I want to be, but one day I’ll get there.”

The Sparks have lost four in a row on the road and 14 of 16 away from home this season.
