Streaking Stars blow out skidding Flyers

stars

Casey DeSmith made 27 saves and four Dallas players scored as the Stars rolled over the host Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on Thursday for their sixth consecutive win.

Mavrik Bourque, Roope Hintz, Wyatt Johnston and Miro Heiskanen tallied for Dallas, which is 7-0-1 in the past eight games. Jason Robertson chipped in two assists as the Stars improved to 2-0-0 on their five-game road trip, which continues north of the border with upcoming matchups against Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.

Morgan Frost scored the lone goal for the Flyers, who fell to 0-3-1 in their last four games. Samuel Ersson returned from a three-game absence caused by a lower-body injury and finished with 19 saves.

Less than two minutes into the game, Dallas’ Matt Dumba moved down the right side and centered the puck, which Bourque deflected past Ersson. Bourque had not scored since Dec. 6.

Hintz doubled the advantage about eight minutes later, ramming home a rebound in front. The Finnish center has recorded four goals over his past five games.

Midway through the second period, Johnston tallied his 10th goal of the season, giving him 13 points in his past 11 games. Jamie Benn found Johnston on a three-on-one rush, and the former first-round pick buried it in the top right corner past a helpless Ersson.

The Flyers finally scored with 13:13 remaining in the contest. Travis Konecny took a shot from the blue line that caromed off the end boards, right to Frost at the doorstep. Frost slammed it home for his eighth goal of the season.

Shortly thereafter, an interference penalty called on Dumba gave Philadelphia a power play. However, the Flyers’ man advantage was quiet, and the hosts didn’t seriously threaten down the stretch.

Heiskanen sealed the game with an empty-netter with 3:13 left — a shot nearly the full length of the ice for his first goal in 20 games.
