Tomas Tatar’s shootout goal lifts road-warrior Devils past Sharks

Tomas Tatar scored the lone shootout goal to lift visiting New Jersey to a 4-3 win over the host San Jose Sharks on Monday, extending the Devils’ NHL-record run in road games to open the season.

Jack Hughes’ goal with 10 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime. Nico Hischier had a goal and an assist, Ryan Graves scored and Jesper Bratt had two assists for the Devils, who have won five straight.

Erik Karlsson and Timo Meier each had a goal and an assist, Nick Bonino scored and Michael Eyssimont added two assists for the Sharks, who lost for the fifth time in their past six games (1-3-2).

Vitek Vanecek had 29 saves for the Devils, who extended their NHL record after becoming the first team in league history to win 17 of their first 20 road games with a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

The Devils tied the game at two just 11 seconds into the third period. Ondrej Palat slipped a pass to Hischier, who wristed a shot past goalie James Reimer.

The Sharks took a 3-2 lead when Vanecek failed to make a clean save of Eyssimont’s shot, enabling Bonino to wrist the rebound into the back of the net with 14:04 to play.

But Hughes tied the game with 10 seconds left when his wrist shot from the point off a pass from Dougie Hamilton deflected off Karlsson’s stick and past Reimer to send the game into overtime.

Reimer made 38 saves for the Sharks, who were outshot 41-32.

The Devils needed just 29 seconds to take a 1-0 lead, with Graves scoring off assists from Yegor Sharangovich and Hischier.

The teams were sent to their locker rooms for the first intermission with 3:59 left in the period because of a fractured kickplate, which protects the edge of the rink’s liner that extends above the ice, behind the Sharks’ goal. The teams returned to play out the first period before immediately starting the second.

Meier tied the game at a goal apiece off assists from Eyssimont and Karlsson with 3:16 left in the opening period.

Karlsson’s power-play goal gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead with just four seconds left in the opening period.
