Warren Foegele tallies twice as Kings top winless Sharks

Kings, Sharks

Warren Foegele scored two goals for Los Angeles on Thursday, helping the Kings win their home opener 3-2 over the winless San Jose Sharks.

Jordan Spence also scored, Alex Laferriere had two assists and David Rittich made 24 saves for the Kings, who have won three of their past four games.

Mikael Granlund scored both San Jose goals on assists from Jack Thompson and Alexander Wennberg. Mackenzie Blackwood made 27 saves for the Sharks, who fell to 0-6-2 and remain the only winless team in the NHL.

Los Angeles built a 3-0 lead in the first period before holding on.

The Kings forced a turnover as the Sharks crossed the Los Angeles blue line, sparking an odd-man rush the other way. Trevor Moore slid the puck to Spence, who scored with a wrist shot from the right circle for a 1-0 lead at 4:31.

Foegele made it 2-0 at 8:47 when he retrieved the puck from behind the San Jose net, failed to score on a wraparound, but then swiped in the rebound with a backhand.

Luke Kunin of the Sharks and Andre Lee of the Kings dropped the gloves 30 seconds after Foegele’s goal, but it failed to stem the momentum as Foegele scored again at 11:36 to make it 3-0.

He won position in front of the San Jose net before tipping a point shot from Brandt Clarke high in the net for his third goal in the past two games.

The Sharks went on their third power play of the game after Kyle Burroughs was called for hooking William Eklund in the second period, and San Jose capitalized on the man advantage, pulling within 3-1 at 10:05.

Granlund received a pass at the left point and skated to the top of the right circle before beating Rittich over his left shoulder with a wrist shot.

Granlund also had scored the lone goal on the power play in the Sharks’ 3-1 road loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday.

The Sharks went on their sixth power play with 1:05 left in the game Thursday and pulled Blackwood for the extra attacker and a two-man advantage. Granlund scored with a wrist shot from above the left circle to cut it to 3-2 with 1:00 left, but Los Angeles held on from there.
