Women’s Top 25 roundup: Clemson upsets No. 20 Cal

Loyal McQueen scored 18 points and Mia Moore tallied nine of her 14 in a dominant third quarter as host Clemson knocked off No. 20 Cal 69-58 in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup on Thursday night.

Cal led by two on Ugonne Onyiah’s jumper with 7:46 to play in the third, but the Tigers (9-5, 2-1 ACC) responded with a 7-0 run. Minutes later, Clemson began a quarter-closing 12-0 burst to lead 61-46 going into the fourth. Moore scored the first seven points of the latter spree.

Ioanna Krimili paced the Golden Bears (13-2, 1-1) with 18 points. Ugonne added 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Marta Suarez chipped in 12 points as Cal’s seven-game winning streak ended.

Tessa Miller scored 11 points and Raven Thompson notched 10 for Clemson, which turned 15 turnovers by Cal into 23 points.

No. 2 South Carolina 83, Missouri 52

The Gamecocks dominated the second half while putting away the Tigers as the teams opened Southeastern Conference play in Columbia, Mo.

MiLaysia Fulwiley scored 14 of her team-high 17 points after intermission as South Carolina broke away from a lead that was only 10 at halftime. Ashlyn Watkins finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, Te-Hina Paopao also scored 11 points and Tessa Johnson chipped in 10 for South Carolina (13-1, 1-0 SEC).

Ashton Judd had 15 points and six rebounds for Missouri (11-5, 0-1). Grace Slaughter added 13 points.

No. 19 Alabama 79, Florida 69

Zaay Green scored 27 points and the Crimson Tide jumped on the Gators early and led by double digits most of the way in the Southeastern Conference opener for each team in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Green went 12 of 22 from the floor and added six assists and four rebounds. Diana Collins chipped in 12 points, Aaliyah Nye had 10 and Essence Cody supplied nine points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for Alabama (14-1, 1-0 SEC).

Liv McGill led Florida (9-6, 0-1) with 18 points. Alexia Gassett and Jeriah Warren netted 12 apiece and Ra Shaya Kyle added 11 points and 13 boards. Kyle’s three-point play pulled the Gators within 76-68 with 2:30 to play, but they missed their last two shots and got no closer.

No. 25 Ole Miss 85, Auburn 58

KK Deans and Kennedy Todd-Williams set season highs with 20 and 19 points, respectively, as the Rebels clobbered the host Tigers in the Southeastern Conference opener for both squads.

Ole Miss (10-3, 1-0 SEC) shot 64.3 percent in the first quarter and took a 26-10 lead into the second. The Rebels padded their lead to 45-20 by halftime. Sira Thienou finished with 12 points and Tameiya Sadler 10 for the visitors.

DeYona Gaston, who began the night seventh in Division I in scoring at 22.7 points per game, netted 30 points on 8-of-15 shooting for Auburn (9-5, 0-1). The Tigers committed 29 turnovers, which the Rebels converted into 37 points.
