Zach Hyman’s hat trick highlights Oilers’ rout of Caps

Capitals, Oilers

Zach Hyman had a natural hat trick and the Edmonton Oilers beat the visiting Washington Capitals 7-2 on Wednesday night.

Leon Draisaitl had a goal and three assists for the Oilers, who are 20-4-1 in their past 25 home games. Connor McDavid added a goal and two assists, and Stuart Skinner made 24 saves for his 30th win of the season.

Edmonton’s Warren Foegele and Connor Brown also scored, while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Evan Bouchard contributed two assists apiece.

Ivan Miroshnichenko and Connor McMichael scored for the Capitals, who are 0-2 on their five-game Western road trip. Darcy Kuemper made 30 saves.

Draisaitl gave Edmonton a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 4:06 of the first period, scoring from the right circle off a pass from Nugent-Hopkins.

McDavid made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 6:58 of the first, taking a pass from Bouchard and walking down the slot before scoring on a wrist shot.

Washington had only five shots on goal in the first period but scored on its first two to tie the game.

Miroshnichenko pulled the Capitals within 2-1 at 8:30 when he got to a loose puck along the right boards, shot the puck toward the net and it eluded Skinner.

McMichael tied it 2-2 with a power-play goal at 10:55. Alex Ovechkin’s shot was blocked in front, but the puck went to McMichael, who scored from the slot.

The tie was short-lived as Hyman gave the Oilers a 3-2 lead just 29 seconds later, knocking in his own rebound in front after a pass from McDavid.

McDavid extended his home point streak to 26 games and reached the 80-assist plateau for the second consecutive season.

Skinner didn’t record a save until 18:19 into the game, but it was a diving effort that robbed Ovechkin.

Hyman made it 4-2 at 14:13 of the second period when he scored off the far post after a pass from Nugent-Hopkins on a two-on-one rush.

The lead increased to 5-2 when Bouchard’s slap shot deflected in off Hyman during a power play at 19:08.

Foegele and Brown scored 19 seconds apart in the middle of the third period for the 7-2 final. It was Brown’s first goal of the season.
