Zach Hyman’s OT winner lifts Oilers over ‘Hawks

Oilers, Blackhawks

Zach Hyman scored a power-play, overtime goal and Leon Draisaitl and Jeff Skinner each had a goal and assist to lift the visiting Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday.

Calvin Pickard stopped 29 shots for the Oilers, who benefited from Draisaitl’s second multi-point game in as many nights to sweep a back-to-back.

Edmonton recovered from a slow start to outshoot Chicago 38-32. The Blackhawks have lost three in a row and six of seven (1-3-3).

Hyman ended the game at 1:36 of OT, sending a net-front feed from Connor McDavid past Blackhawks goalie Arvid Soderblom.

Chicago rallied for a pair of goals over a 4:04 span to tie the game with 3:44 remaining in regulation. Ryan Donato started the surge with a tip-in power play goal, then assisted on Alec Martinez’s equalizer.

Teuvo Teravainen nearly capped the comeback for the Blackhawks, hitting the crossbar in the closing seconds. Teravainen had two assists and finished with eight points in three games against the Oilers this season.

Skinner scored at 1:11 of the third, collecting Draisaitl’s pass from behind the net and finishing with a nifty backhand.

Draisaitl’s league-best 38th goal at 8:18 of the third extended the Oilers’ lead to 3-1. Edmonton’s forecheck forced a turnover deep in the Chicago zone and Draisaitl capitalized.

Edmonton took a 1-0 lead at 8:51 of the second period as Viktor Arvidsson beat Soderblom from a difficult angle. Soderblom, who made 34 saves, seemingly was squared up to meet Arvidsson, who wristed a shot over the goaltender’s blocker on the short side.

Blackhawks forward Jason Dickinson left the game a few minutes earlier after his left leg bent underneath him as he tried to gain control of the puck near center ice. Dickinson put minimal weight on the leg while being helped to the Chicago dressing room and didn’t return.

Chicago interim coach Anders Sorensen shifted Lukas Reichel to the second line as a result, a move that paid dividends in the closing seconds of the second period. Darting to the net, Reichel tipped a Teravainen wrist shot from just outside the right circle past Pickard to tie the game at 1.

Edmonton won the season series from Chicago 2-1.
