Cam Newton signs with Carolina Panthers

A reunion between Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers is now a reality.

Newton and the Panthers convened for a meeting on Thursday and agreed to terms on a contract shortly thereafter to bring the former NFL MVP back to Charlotte. The deal is pending a physical, but Newton shared a picture of himself with team owner David Tepper.

ESPN reported the contract terms of up to $10 million for rest of the season and $4.5 million fully guaranteed with a $1.5 million roster bonus.

The Charlotte Observer reported Panthers head coach Matt Rhule, Tepper and Steven Drummond, the vice president of football operations, would be in attendance at the Thursday meeting.

Newton, 32, was a free agent and had remained unsigned since the New England Patriots released him in August before the start of the regular season.

Debut Against Riverboat Ron?

Newton would not likely be active Sunday when the Panthers play the Arizona Cardinals. That could make his return game with Carolina the Week 11 matchup with the Washington Football Team coached by former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera.

Newton starred for the Panthers for nine seasons and was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2011. He was NFL MVP in 2015 and led the Panthers to Super Bowl 50 that season, a loss to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

Newton spent last season with the Patriots after being released by the Panthers prior to the 2020 NFL Draft.

He has passed for 31,698 yards and run for another 5,398 over the course of his NFL career.

Carolina is planning to start untested PJ Walker at quarterback with starter Sam Darnold (shoulder) possibly out for more than one month.

Darnold became the starting quarterback in the offseason when the Panthers acquired him from the New York Jets.
