Browns to release WR Odell Beckham Jr.

The Cleveland Browns announced Friday morning that they are releasing wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

Multiple media outlets reported Thursday that the Browns and Beckham were negotiating the terms of the release before the team announced its decision on the star wideout’s 29th birthday.

“After careful consideration, internal discussions and conversations with Odell and his representation, we’ve determined that it is in the best interest of all parties involved that Odell no longer play for the Cleveland Browns,” Browns executive vice president and general manager Andrew Berry said in a statement.

“We appreciate all of his efforts and contributions while in Cleveland, but we’ve just reached a point where it is best that we move forward as a team without Odell. We are finalizing the process of granting Odell his release and we wish him well as he continues his career.”

Per NFL Network, the Browns and Beckham agreed to a reworked contract. He will now head to waivers.

Beckham was excused from practice for a second consecutive day Thursday. He was told not to attend Wednesday’s practice one day after his father posted an Instagram video showing quarterback Baker Mayfield either not throwing the ball to his son or missing him when he was open.

According to ESPN, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski addressed the team before Wednesday’s practice and informed players that Beckham would no longer be a Brown.

OBJ Goes Quiet

Both Stefanski and Mayfield said Wednesday that they had not heard from Beckham since his father’s posts went viral.

Beckham, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, finished with just one catch for six yards in Cleveland’s 15-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday. He has 17 catches for 232 yards with no touchdown receptions in six games this season.

Beckham has 504 catches for 7,062 yards with 51 touchdowns in 88 career games with the New York Giants (2014-18) and Browns. He has caught seven touchdown passes in his 29 games with Cleveland.
