Giants surprise Seahawks despite missing key players due to injuries

giants

Daniel Jones threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns and the New York Giants, playing without their leading rusher and receiver, pulled out a 29-20 victory against the host Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Giants rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr., starting for the injured Devin Singletary (groin), rushed for 129 yards – 100 more than he had over the first four games – and Darius Slayton, stepping up with Malik Nabers (concussion) out, made eight receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown.

The Giants (2-3) clinched the victory when Isaiah Simmons blocked a potential tying field goal and Bryce Ford-Wheaton returned it 60 yards for a touchdown with 55 seconds remaining.

Geno Smith led the Seahawks (3-2) by completing 28 of 40 passes for 284 yards and a touchdown. Smith also gained a team-high 72 yards on four carries.

Smith threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba with 2:09 remaining, capping a 95-yard drive, to pull the Seahawks within three.

Seattle’s defense forced a three-and-out and Smith drove the Seahawks to New York’s 28-yard line before Jason Myers’ 45-yard attempt was blocked.

The Giants broke a 10-all tie on a 30-yard scoring strike from Jones to Slayton with 10:41 left in the third quarter.

The score was tied at the half despite the Giants having sizable advantages in first downs (15-5), yardage (226-90) and time of possession (21:55-8:55).

After stopping the Seahawks on the game’s opening possession, the Giants put together a 16-play, 79-yard drive that took 10:01 off the clock. But on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line, Eric Gray fumbled while trying to reach for the goal line and Seattle’s Rayshawn Jenkins picked up the ball and returned it 102 yards for a touchdown.

The Giants tied the score on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Wan’Dale Robinson with 9:09 left in the second quarter.

Joseph’s 38-yard field goal with 22 seconds remaining in the half gave the Giants a 10-7 lead.

The Seahawks, who had gained just 45 yards up to that point, doubled that over the next two plays, with Smith throwing a 17-yard screen pass to Kenneth Walker III and a 28-yarder to Tyler Lockett to set up Myers’ 43-yard field goal with 2 seconds to go.
