Reports: Ole Miss set to hire Kiffin as head coach

Lane Kiffin, a failed head coach at Tennessee and a successful offensive coordinator at Alabama, is ready to take on the Southeastern Conference again.

ESPN and USA Today reported Friday night that Kiffin, currently the head coach at Florida Atlantic, was finalizing a deal to take over as the head coach at Ole Miss. According to both media outlets, the contract would be completed on Saturday.

Kiffin reportedly had recent discussions with both Ole Miss and Arkansas about their head-coaching vacancies before settling on the Rebels.

The 44-year-old Nebraska native has his 9-3 Florida Atlantic team in the Conference USA championship game on Saturday against UAB at home in Boca Raton, Fla.

Strong run at FAU kept Kiffin in demand

In three seasons with the Owls, Kiffin has compiled a 25-13 record, with a second bowl appearance due in the next month.

Kiffin’s first head-coaching job was with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders in 2007 and ’08, when he compiled a 5-15 record. He moved on to Tennessee, where he produced a 7-6 season in 2009 before immediately exiting to become the head coach at Southern California. He was fired in September 2013, early in his fourth season at Los Angeles, after posting a 28-15 record with the Trojans.

Next came a stint as Nick Saban’s offensive coordinator at Alabama from 2014-16. The Crimson Tide reached the College Football Playoff in all three seasons, winning the 2015 national title and winding up as runner-up the next year.

In Oxford, Miss., Kiffin would be taking over for Matt Luke, who was fired Sunday after a 4-8 season. Luke had a 15-21 record in three seasons in charge at Ole Miss.
