Patrick Reed is battling bilateral pneumonia and his participation in the FedEx playoffs appears uncertain.
Reed was the defending champion of the last Northern Trust event at Liberty National in 2019 but had to withdraw due to an ankle injury.
He told Golf Channel on Monday he was in Houston with double pneumonia.
“The good news is, my ankle is okay,” Reed told Golf Channel “The bad news is I’ve been in the hospital with bilateral pneumonia. I’m on the road to recovery, once I’m cleared from the doctors – I look forward to returning. I wish you all the best and I can’t wait to get back out there!
“Thank you so much for your support,” he continued, “it means a lot to me. Also, a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.”
Reed sprained his ankle the week prior to The Northern Trust at the FedEx St. Jude. If he’s unable to return to the course Thursday for the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland, it will mark three weeks in a row without appearing in the tour event.
Missing additional time could push Reed out of the running for Ryder Cup spot. He’s currently ninth in the US Ryder Cup standings and the top six will automatically qualify.
Reed was 22nd in the points race entering The Northern Trust. The last time he failed to qualify for the TOUR Championship as a top-30 finisher was 2013.
