Thanks to a steady second-round effort, Charlie Woods made the cut by two strokes at the Junior PGA Championships on Wednesday in Frisco, Texas.

The 17-year-old son of Tiger Woods carded a 2-under-par 70 at Fields Ranch’s West Course, leaving him tied for 46th at 1-over 145. The top 60 players and ties advanced to play the final two rounds.

Woods, from Jupiter, Fla., opened with a 3-over-par 75 at Fields Ranch’s East Course on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, he birdied the par-4 second hole but immediately gave the stroke back with a bogey at the par-3 third hole. Woods was flawless the rest of the way, recording 13 pars plus birdies at two par-4 holes, No. 9 and No. 18.

Last year, Woods tied for ninth in the Junior PGA Championships.

A week ago, Woods failed to reach the match-play portion of the U.S. Junior Amateur, coming up short in a playoff after stroke play at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.

Though he made the cut on Wednesday, Woods lost ground to Kailer Stone of Alameda, Calif., who maintained the lead for the second day in a row. Stone shot a 5-under 67, leaving him at 9-under 135, one stroke ahead of Theodore Snyder of Gig Harbor, Wash., who also was 5 under in the second round.

Ainslie Stanford of Edmond, Okla., charged into contention with the best round of the tournament so far, a 9-under 63. He sits two strokes back of Stone at 7-under 137.

Matthew Marigliano of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. (second-round 66); Jacob Newsom of Tulsa (67); Evan Liu of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. (65); and Spencer Harrison of Perth, Australia (67) are tied for fourth at 6-under 138.
