Rahm, Thomas clear betting favorites at Phoenix Open

Jon Rahm is arguably the hottest golfer on the planet right now. He’s also the highest-ranked player in the field at this week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open.

So it stands to reason that he’s the betting favorite at one of the PGA Tour’s most popular fan destinations at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course.

Justin Thomas

The third-ranked Spaniard is the +600 betting favorite by both DraftKings and PointsBet as he comes off a runner-up finish at Torrey Pines. Rahm has three victories, four runner-ups and five other top-10 finishes in his past 15 worldwide starts dating back to the 2019 U.S. Open.

Rahm has finished T10 and T11 in Phoenix the past two years, but he does have plenty of formidable competition this week.

That begins with Justin Thomas, the fourth-ranked player in the world who already has a pair of victories during the 2019-20 season. This week he joined Tiger Woods, Jimmy Walker and Dustin Johnson as the only players to spent 30 weeks during their careers atop the FedEx Cup standings.

Thomas is being offered at +850 by PointsBet and +950 by DraftKings. He took two weeks off after missing the cut at the Sony Open. Before struggling in Maui, Thomas had three wins and 11 consecutive top-20 finishes since last year’s Scottish Open.

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama hasn’t won since 2017, but the Japanese star can never be overlooked at TPC Scottsdale, where he has a pair of victories and two other top-five finishes in six starts in the event. At +1500 by PointsBet and +1600 by DraftKings, Matsuyama provides solid odds on a course he owns a great history at.

Rickie Fowler

By contrast, Rickie Fowler is being offered at +1400 by DraftKings. Granted, Fowler is the defending champion, but he has not finished better than T46 in five previous title defenses. He’s also coming off a missed cut at the Farmers Insurance Open after struggling in the final group the previous week at The American Express. PointsBet is offering Fowler at +1600, with both books listing Webb Simpson as the third betting favorite (+1200 by DK, +1400 by PB).

There are other big names who figure to be in the mix as well.

Bubba Watson (+2500 PB, +3000 DK) has four career top-five finishes at TPC Scottsdale, while reigning U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland (+2800, +3000) won the event in 2018 and finished T7 last year.

Time for another young gun to emerge?

Several of the Tour’s young guns are also in the field.

Reigning Rookie of the Year Sungjae Im (+3000 by both books) and Viktor Hovland (+5000 by PB, +5500 by DK) are hunting for their maiden professional wins, while Collin Morikawa (+3000, +3500) already has one title under his belt. Morikawa held his own while grouped with Woods for the first two rounds last week before falling out of contention with a 74 on Saturday.

Morikawa finished T21 at Torrey Pines along with Matthew Wolff (+4000, +5500).

FanDuel, who also has Rahm (+650) and Thomas (+850) as the clear outright favorites, is offering a number of prop bets.

Rahm is +1900 to lead after the first round, followed by Thomas (+2100), Matsuyama (+2900) and Simpson (+2900).

If you’re not as bullish on Rahm winning outright, FanDuel is offering +165 odds on a top 5 finish and -110 on a top 10, with Thomas at +210 and +110 for the same bets. And if you want to bet who will finish highest between the two, Rahm is -132 to Thomas’ +102.

The sportsbook is also offering odds on the top finisher with Rahm, Thomas, Simpson, Matsuyama and Fowler taken out of the mix.

Winning odds, minus Rahm, Thomas, Simpson, Matsuyama, Fowler

Xander Schauffele: +1400
Bryson DeChambeau: +1500
Bubba Watson: +1600
Collin Morikawa: +2100
Tony Finau: +2100
Gary Woodland: +2200
Brandt Snedeker: +2600
Matt Kuchar: +2600
Sungjae Im: +2600
