Steelers QB Roethlisberger done for 2019 season

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is out of the season and will undergo surgery on his right elbow.

“Ben Roethlisberger had an MRI on his right elbow Sunday evening and it was determined by the Steelers’ medical team that surgery will be required. We expect the surgery will be scheduled for this week. He will be placed on our Reserve/Injured List and is out for the season,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement released by the team Monday.

Roethlisberger left Sunday’s game in the second quarter, grabbing his right elbow after attempting a pass before halftime.

The Steelers lost 28-26 at home to the Seattle Seahawks and are 0-2 to start the season for only the second time in Roethlisberger’s 16-year career.

Mason Rudolph entered the game with Roethlisberger hurt and completed 12 of 19 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns. Rudolph becomes the starter for the Steelers, who play the San Francisco 49ers this week.

“I am completely confident in myself, being a leader of a team, and playing games,” Rudolph said Sunday. “That’s what it all comes down to. … I’m ready to roll.”

The 37-year-old Roethlisberger had been hoping to avoid the scalpel and play with the elbow injury, which could be managed with treatment in some cases.

Roethlisberger signed a two-year contract extension in the offseason but has previously hinted at retirement. Depending on the nature of the surgery, Roethlisberger could need more than one year to rehab from the injury.
