Reports: Suns sign Fredette for rest of season

The Phoenix Suns have reached a two-year deal with Jimmer Fredette, giving the former college phenom a second crack at the NBA, according to reports.
Fredette, 30, is awaiting clearance from his current team, the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association. Fredette averaged 36.9 points per game this season for the Sharks, who were eliminated from the postseason Tuesday.
The Athletic and 98.7 Arizona’s Sports Station reported the move.
He will be signed through the rest of this season, with a team option for 2019-2020.
Fredette, a 6-foot-2 guard, was the unanimous national player of the year in college basketball in 2011 after shattering NCAA scoring records. He is the all-time leading scorer in BYU and Mountain West Conference history. He holds five other MWC records, as well as 11 BYU records.
However, the wunderkind’s game did not translate well to the NBA; he averaged just 6.0 points per game in five NBA seasons, spanning 235 games. He shot 38.1 percent from 3-point range.
Fredette was drafted 10th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2011 and subsequently traded to the Sacramento Kings.
After two-plus seasons with the Kings, Fredette played briefly for the Chicago Bulls, one-plus season with the New Orleans Pelicans, and just two games with the New York Knicks in 2016.
